March of Microanalysis Day 8

Microfiction Entry Day 8:

Timmy slipped down a black hole, falling forever.

So would Timmy fall forever? Or would he merely hover at the event horizon, stuck forever as his dimensionality was crushed by gravity into a single point? How the hell would I know? Do I look like a scientist? Answer: no. But I thought the idea was pretty funny. And I would say that is is really the first “story story” of the month. There’s a bona

Microfiction Entry Day 7:

Looked under the bed. Monster looked back.

Mmmm, I messed up. Looking back, I should have gone with my draft version, which was “Looked under the bed. Eyes looked back.” That would have been better. Mea culpa, readers. Okay, reader. (Thank you, one person!)

What was I thinking, using monster? Maybe that it was more punchy, more direct. Seven words, after all, still isn’t a lot. I must have wanted to be obvious, because I

Microfiction Entry Day 6:

Together, we watched the skies fall.

Apoco-licous! “Together” tells you that the narrator is not alone. “Skies fall” conveys something momentous, more so than "sky". If they watched the “sky fall”, while technically correct, it would be a bit too Chicken Little to have the same impact.

So what's happening in this story? As with the other entries, the story is more suggestion than outright explanation. I picture a small group of folks, gazing in horror

Microfiction Entry Day 5:

First mistake? Trusting Old Nick.

Alrighty, we’re getting somewhere now. Five whole words to play with. Adverb and adjectives can join in the fun. Characters start appearing. Still, with so few words to spare, it helps to use characters or names that are chock full of personality, such as Satan. He’s got quite a lot of personality (and soul, I hear). So why did I use “Old Nick” and not simply “Satan”? After all

Microfiction Entry Day 4:

Shot. Miss. Buzzer. Game.

Screw you, day one! Here’s a four word story with nary a single verb. But these nouns are obviously not random. They so often appear together, usually in the context of a game, in this case a basketball game. (I got my plus one the NBA League Pass so we can watch the Bucks lose online. It clearly influenced my writing). So these words, nouny as they may be, carry certain

Microfiction entry: Day 3

Flowers never grew.

The growth of flowers is a pretty laid-back thing. So the non-growth of flowers must be even more so. In any case, I guess this is technically a story, since there's an ending…a tragic ending. Or mock-tragic,like what a goth girl might pronounce upon visiting her classmate's grave a year after the funeral. But as a story, it's still pretty weak. Three words just doesn't give one a lot to go
